How to Transition Your Home from Summer to Autumn, Room by Room

How to Transition Your Home from Summer to Autumn, Room by Room

The first time the heating comes on each autumn, the whole house smells of warm dust for about an hour. It's also when most people look around and notice the living room is still dressed for August: thin linen cushions, a pale flatweave underfoot, a jug of flowers that stopped being fresh a fortnight ago.

You don't need to redecorate. Autumn home decor is mostly a swap, and it works best in a set order: fabrics first, then light, then scent, then whatever sits on the table. If you've been wondering how to decorate your home for autumn without buying a whole new set of everything, this guide goes through the house room by room. It covers what to put away, what to bring out and what's worth buying if you're short of something.

It's written for a British October, so the real deadline is Sunday 25 October, when the clocks go back. After that it's dark before five, and the house needs to be ready for it.

Put summer away first

Before you bring anything in, take a few things out. Wash the thin throws and cushion covers, fold them and store them somewhere dry. A room looks more autumnal when the summer things are gone than when you've added a pumpkin, and you end up with a clean base to build on.

Two small jobs help too. Wash the windows, because the low autumn sun shows every streak. And clear the radiators, since a sofa pushed up against one wastes most of the heat.

Autumn home decor ideas that work in a British house

Most autumn decorating ideas online lean hard on orange. In a real house, autumn colour usually means one warm shade laid over a neutral base you already own: rust, olive, ochre, burgundy or a deep brown. FableRoom's cushions come in all of these, so you can pick one and repeat it instead of trying to match a whole palette.

Choose a leading colour and use it in two or three places. Olive on a cushion, olive in a throw, an olive leather stool by the window. That repetition is what makes a room look planned. Only add a second colour if the first is quiet.

Texture matters more than colour once it gets cold. Summer rooms are smooth and flat, all cotton, linen and jute. Autumn home styling is mostly about depth, which means velvet, knit, wool and leather. If you change nothing else, change the surfaces.

Autumn living room ideas: Start with the sofa

The sofa is where the season shows first. Take off the summer covers and put back fewer, heavier cushions. The Sorrel Velvet Cushion is one option, and the Corin Cotton-Wool Cushion looks soft and feels it. Add one leather cushion, or a suede one, because leather ages well and sits nicely against anything knitted.

Then the throw. A woven cotton one is right for August, but for October you want a knit. The Cason Knitted Throw in beige or blue, folded over an arm where you can reach it, does more for a sofa than any amount of rearranging.

Underfoot, swap the jute or flatweave for wool if you can. It's warmer on bare feet and quieter, and FableRoom's New Zealand wool rugs range from the multicoloured Marlo kilim to the pale, tufted Ameen in ivory. If you're keeping your current rug, layer a smaller wool one on top, and our guide to layering rugs without it looking messy shows how.

Light is the biggest change. In summer, the room lights itself until nine, and from now on you have to do it. Switch off the main light and use two or three lamps at different heights. Complete lamps like the Fehd Cotton Lampshade with Fluted Mango Wood Base are on the table lamps page, or you can build your own from the bases and shades. Use a warm white bulb at around 2700K, because a cool one undoes all the work of the cushions.

For scent, the Sunlit Grove candle, with bergamot, neroli and an amber base, is bright enough for daytime and warm enough by lamplight. Our fragrance wardrobe guide covers the rest of the range.

Cosy autumn home ideas for the bedroom

A bedroom needs to be warm without being stuffy, so the change is one of layers rather than a heavier version of everything. Swap the summer duvet for a warmer one and dress the bed in stages: a fitted sheet, a duvet cover, then a bedspread folded across the bottom third. FableRoom's bedspread sets, like the Opal, are made for exactly this, and the organic cotton sheet sets (Kaia, Niel and Elio) make a good base underneath.

The bedding here is mostly white, ivory, beige and grey, so autumn arrives through the extras. Drape a knitted throw over one corner and add a couple of the heavier cushions. For more on layering the bed itself, our bedding, cushions and throws guide goes into detail.

Put a wool rug on the floor beside the bed, so the first step out of it isn't onto cold boards. Light the room with a bedside lamp instead of the ceiling light, such as the Teresa Silk Ombre Lampshade with Sculptural Mango Wood Base, whose silk shade gives a softer glow. Keep scent quiet here. Sunday Linen, with fresh cotton and soft florals, sits in the background of a bedroom and doesn't compete with sleep.

The dining room goes back to work

Autumn is when the dining table gets used again. The Sunday roast returns, friends stay later, and dinner happens in the dark.

Start with the linen. Swap the pale summer runner and napkins for deeper tones, and lay a runner down the middle so you have somewhere to put candles. Our guide to styling table linen for every occasion has the details, and the table linen collection covers runners, napkins, placemats and tablecloths.

Turn the main light off and put a lamp on the sideboard. Then a word on candles: don't burn a strongly scented one on the table while you're eating, because it fights with the food. Light unscented ones at the table and keep the scented one on the sideboard or in the next room. If your dining chairs are leather in cognac or olive, they already look like October, and the room needs very little else.

The kitchen

Kitchens change least between seasons and gain the most from small things. A bowl of apples and pears on the counter looks right and gets eaten. Put the summer herbs on the windowsill somewhere they'll survive, and bring the heavier cookware to the front of the cupboard, since this is soup and slow-cooking weather. If you have a shelf or dresser away from the hob and sink, a small lamp turns the kitchen into a room you want to sit in after dinner.

The hallway

The hall does more work in autumn than any other room. It's where wet coats, umbrellas and muddy shoes end up, and it's also the first thing anyone sees. A wool runner is the best fit, and the wool rug range has plenty of runners. The washable rugs are worth a look too, if the mud is a daily reality.

Add a bench for sitting down to pull boots off, and a lamp on the console table so you come home to light instead of a dark corridor. Our guide to using a console table beyond the hallway has more ideas.

The bathroom

Swap thin summer towels for heavier ones, and put a mat down on the cold floor. Burn candles well away from the towels. Ventilation matters more now that the windows stay shut, so leave the extractor running a few minutes after a shower to keep the damp down.

FAQs

How do I make my home cosy for autumn?
Add texture before colour: a knitted throw, velvet or wool cushions and a wool rug do most of the work. Then swap the ceiling light for two or three lamps with warm white bulbs.

When should I switch my home from summer to autumn?
Early October is the sweet spot, once the evenings turn properly cool and before the clocks go back on Sunday 25 October. Doing it then means the house is ready for the dark evenings instead of catching up with them.

What colours work best for autumn home decor?
Rust, olive, ochre, burgundy and deep brown all work against a neutral base. Pick one to lead and repeat it in two or three places instead of using them all at once.

What should I change first when decorating for autumn?
Start with soft furnishings, because throws, cushions and bedding change a room faster than anything else. Lamps and a candle come next.

How do I decorate for autumn without it looking like a theme?
Leave out the novelty items and use natural materials in warm colours, plus a bowl of apples or a branch in a vase. If it would still look right in December, it belongs.
